Distinguished Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen.
I am pleased to stand before you today with a profound sense of hope and determination as we gather to mark this momentous occasion—the launching of Sierra Leone’s Medium-Term National Development Plan, 2024- 2030. This national development plan symbolizes our collective commitment to forge a path of sustainable development, inclusivity, and resilience for the people of Sierra Leone.
At the outset, let me extend my sincere gratitude to the Government and People of Sierra Leone and all international development partners for their unwavering support, guidance, and collaborative spirit in shaping this transformative journey. The launch of the National Development Plan is not just a milestone for Sierra Leone; it is a testament to the power of global cooperation and solidarity.
I personally see this Plan to be more than a mere document; it is a vision that encapsulates the aspirations of the Government and people of Sierra Leone—a vision for a future where prosperity is shared equitably, where no one is left behind, and where sustainable development is the guiding principle for every policy, initiative, and action undertaken. That is why I am delighted that the United Nations in Sierra Leone was part of the drafting process of this MTNDP, 2024-2030. Let me use this opportunity to reaffirm our continuous commitment to supporting the implementation of this plan, which I believe will bring economic and social prosperity to the people of Sierra Leone. To substantiate our commitment, I want to inform all that the United Nations in Sierra Leone will start the development of its new United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework immediately after the launch of the MTNDP today. The UN CF will articulate the UN’s development programmes in Sierra Leone for the next five years. We hope to work with our national counterparts to ensure that our CF is aligned with the MTNDP as best as possible.
As we embark on this journey, I recognize the diverse strengths of this country—the resilience of its people, the richness of your cultural heritage, and the abundance of natural resources. It is my belief that this National Development Plan will harness these strengths and leverage them for the collective well-being of all Sierra Leoneans. We all understand that sustainable development can only be achieved when the benefits are shared by all. I urge all players to ensure that the programmes in this plan prioritize vulnerable communities, ensuring they have equal access to education, healthcare, and economic opportunities. I am convinced that the priority areas in this plan will ensure transformative development for Sierra Leone as we approach the 2030 deadline for achieving the SDGs.
Your Excellency, distinguished ladies and gentlemen, in the face of global challenges such as climate change and geopolitical conflicts that have caused supply chain disruption, it is important to note that the Sierra Leone Medium Term National Development Plan embraces the imperative of environmental stewardship and resilience to external shocks. The United Nations commits to sustainable practices, climate-resilient infrastructure, and the preservation of natural heritage for future generations.
The UN acknowledges that the achievement of development goals requires collaboration on a global scale. We stand ready to work hand in hand with the Government and other partners to leverage collective expertise and resources for the greater good of all Sierra Leoneans.
The success of this National Development Plan will be measured not just in economic indicators but in the tangible improvements in the lives of the people of Sierra Leone. We aspire for a nation where every child receives a quality education, where healthcare is accessible to all, and where poverty is relegated to the pages of history.
In conclusion, let me reiterate that the launching of this National Development Plan is a beacon of hope, a promise for a brighter tomorrow. Let us all embark on this journey with optimism, unity, and a shared determination to overcome challenges. Together, we can turn our vision into reality, creating a future where Sierra Leone stands as a shining example of sustainable development and global cooperation.
I thank you all.
